History

Indian Head has a rich tradition of baking that stretches back more than a century, reflecting the town’s agricultural heritage and close-knit community spirit. The earliest bakeries in Indian Head began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when pioneers like Joseph Liggett established the Pioneer Bakery in the 1890s and delivered fresh bread by pony and cart — a testament to the essential role of bread in everyday prairie life. In the early 1900s, other local bakers such as George Stinson continued the tradition, providing bread and baked goods to locals who counted on fresh, daily-made products.

The building that now houses Indian Head Bakery & Deli at 505 Grand Avenue has long been part of Main Street’s commercial fabric. In 1964, Gordon Smith tore down older structures and built the bakery building that stands today — carrying forward decades of baking history. Over the years, ownership passed through several local families and entrepreneurs, each contributing to its reputation for fresh bread, buns, sweets, and homestyle deli items. Notable owners include Brian Hill in the early 1980s and Hugh and Debbie McNaughton in the late 1980s. In the 2010s, Bart and Lisa Horsman were proud stewards of the bakery, continuing its legacy of quality and community service.

Today, Indian Head Bakery & Deli is now owned by John and Nicole Clark, they will continue this long baking tradition, offering freshly baked bread, sandwiches, pastries, and deli favourites that draw locals and visitors alike. It remains a beloved part of Indian Head’s downtown and celebrates a legacy rooted in more than 70 years of serving the community.
